By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH

TANGKAK: The driver of an express bus which crashed, killing 10 passengers, along the North-South Expressway near here recently was charged at the Tangkak magistrate’s court with reckless driving causing deaths.

S. Segaran, 26, from Taman Seri Perak, Air Tawar in Perak, pleaded not guilty when he was brought before magistrate Mohamad Yasser Mohd Nasri on Friday.

Prosecuting officer Chief Insp. K. Subramaniay asked the court to impose a RM10,000 bail and also to suspend Segaran’s driving licence.

However, defence counsel S. Vijayaretnam asked for lower bail and the court fixed RM6,000 bail with one surety. It also set Jan 22, 2009 for the case to be mentioned again.

The court also ordered Segaran’s driving licence be suspended until the case was concluded.

On Dec 7, the accused was driving the bus when it lost control and crashed against a tree at about 2am along KM146 of the North-South Expressway.

Seven of the 26 passengers died on the spot while three others succumbed to their injuries at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Muar.

Segaran was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.
